| | Wash hands and put gloves |
| | Ask client to sit erect in bed or chair facing nurse , acutely ill client may lie back against end with head of bed raised to 45 degree angle |
| | Have swab in tube ready for use. nurse may wish to loosen top so swab can be easily removed |
| | While collecting throat culture · Instruct patient to tilt head backwards for clients in bed , place pillow behind shoulder · If pharynx not visualized , depress tongue with tongue with tongue blades and not inflamed areas of pharynx. Prepare 1/3 of tongue only · Insert swab without touching lips, teeth , tongue and cheeks · gently but quickly swab tonsillar area to side making contact with inflamed or purulent sites · Carefully withdraw swab without striking oral structure .immediately place swab in culture · Place top on tube · Discard tongue depressor into trash · Wash hands · Securely attach properly , completed identification · Send specimen immediately to laboratory or store in refrigerator |
