1. | Wash hands |
2. | Position patient in comfortable position , arranging support for area to be bandaged |
3. | Provide privacy |
4. | Ensure that skin and or dressing is clean and dry |
5. | Separate any adjacent skin surface |
6. | Align part to be bandaged , providing slight flexion if appropriate and not contraindicated |
7. | Apply bandage from distal to proximal part |
8. | Apply bandage with even distribution of pressure |
9. | Use proper bandage turns · Circular § Apply bandage so that each round overlaps the previous turn § Secure in place · Spiral § Make 2 circular turns § Continue so that each round of bandage slightly overlaps the previous round by about two thirds , progressing up the limb § End with 2 circular turns and secure with pins , tape or clips · Spiral reverse § Make 2 circular turns § Bring bandage upwards at 30 degree angle § Place thumb of free hand on upper edge of bandage § Fold bandage back on itslelf § Perform reversal of bandage at same spot on each turn § End with two circular turns and secure with safety pins · Figure of eight § Make two circular turns § Carry bandage above joint , around it , then below joint and around it § Continue above and below joint making 2 circular turns § End bandage above joint and circulation of extremity |
10. | Assess tension of bandage and circulation of extremity |
11. | Position patient for comfort |
